Best West End Shows in London 2026: Tickets & Guide

The West End is one of the two greatest theatre districts on earth, alongside Broadway, and for many visitors a show is the highlight of the whole trip. Around 40 theatres cluster in the streets around Shaftesbury Avenue, Covent Garden, and Leicester Square, staging everything from decades-old blockbuster musicals to the newest plays. This guide covers the best shows on in 2026, what tickets really cost, how to get them cheaply, and where to sit, so you book the right show at the right price.

Quick answer. The must-see long-runners are The Lion King, Wicked, Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Hamilton, and Mamma Mia. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Matilda are the best for families. Tickets typically run £25 to £150, with premium seats higher and restricted-view seats from around £20. For cheap tickets, use the official TKTS booth in Leicester Square (up to 50% off same-day), the TodayTix app for rush tickets and lotteries, or book a midweek matinee. Book the headline shows well in advance, they sell out.

How to get cheap West End tickets

  • TKTS Leicester Square, the ONLY official half-price booth, run by the Society of London Theatre. Same-day and next-few-days tickets up to 50% off, from 10:30 daily. Avoid the many unofficial "half-price" shops around it.
  • TodayTix app, digital rush tickets released each morning, plus lotteries for the big shows. Cheap and easy.
  • Show lotteries, Hamilton (£10), The Book of Mormon, and others run daily digital lotteries for a handful of very cheap front-row seats. Enter the day before.
  • Day seats, some theatres sell a few front-row tickets cheaply from the box office when it opens each morning. Queue early for popular shows.
  • Midweek matinees, Tuesday to Thursday matinees and Monday evenings are the cheapest performances.
  • Restricted-view seats, often a genuine bargain if you do not mind a slight angle or a distant view. Read the seat notes when booking.

Where to sit, the best seats guide

The best seats in most West End theatres are the centre of the stalls, rows F to L (far enough back to see the whole stage, close enough for detail), or the front of the Dress Circle (a slightly elevated, full view). For big spectacle musicals with elaborate staging, a little height in the Dress Circle can actually be better than the stalls. Avoid the very front rows (you look up at the stage) and the extreme sides of any level (restricted view). Many West End theatres are Victorian, so legroom is tight and some Upper Circle seats have pillars, always check a seating plan when you book.

Show timings & pre-theatre dining

Evening performances usually start at 19:30, matinees at 14:30 on selected days (commonly Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday). Arrive at least 30 minutes early to collect tickets, get a drink, and find your seat, latecomers are often held at the back until a suitable break. Most shows run 2 to 3 hours including a 15 to 20 minute interval, when you can pre-order interval drinks to skip the bar queue.

The streets around the theatres, Soho, Covent Garden, and Chinatown, are full of restaurants offering pre-theatre set menus, typically two courses for £22 to £30, served from around 17:30 to 18:45. It is the best value way to eat before a show. Book a table, tell them you have a show, and they will get you out in time.

Getting to the theatre

The West End is served by Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Piccadilly Circus, Tottenham Court Road, and Charing Cross Underground stations, all within a few minutes' walk of the theatres. Covent Garden gets very busy at show time, so Leicester Square or Tottenham Court Road are often quicker. For a special occasion, an anniversary, a milestone birthday, or simply to arrive relaxed and dressed up without the Tube crush, a private car drops you at the theatre door.

Chauffeurz Premium Services, theatre nights & special occasions

Arrive at the theatre door relaxed and on time, with a pre-booked pickup after the final curtain so you are not hunting for a cab at 22:30 with the whole audience. Ideal for an anniversary, a milestone birthday, or a special theatre night. Pair it with the London by Night private tour (from £225 per vehicle) to make an evening of it. Fixed pricing, no surge charges, WhatsApp booking.
